Generate a Subcontractor Compliance Checklist — Free Tool for UK Contractors

Select trade types and project scope to generate a downloadable PDF checklist of required compliance documents.

1. Select the trades working on your project

Choose all that apply. Core compliance documents (insurance, CSCS, CIS) are included automatically for every trade.

2. Select your project type

This determines which project-level CDM documents are required. Select all that apply.

Select at least one trade to continue.

Managing subcontractor compliance on a UK construction project means tracking insurance certificates, CSCS cards, CIS verification, trade qualifications, and project-level CDM documents — for every subcontractor, on every project. Missing a single document can mean an uninsured operative on your site or a failed client audit.

What this tool does

Select the trades working on your project and the project type (multi-contractor, single-contractor, notifiable). The generator produces a tailored checklist of every compliance document you should collect from each subcontractor — including core requirements (employers' liability insurance, CSCS, CIS) and trade-specific certifications (Gas Safe, NICEIC, CISRS, etc.). Download the checklist as a PDF to use on site or share with your team.

Why a checklist matters

Under CDM 2015 (Regulation 8), principal contractors must verify that every appointed contractor has the skills, knowledge, experience, and organisational capability to carry out their work safely. A structured checklist ensures nothing is missed — especially on projects with 10, 20, or 30 active subcontractors across multiple trades. It also provides a documented record that you took reasonable steps to verify competence, which is the legal standard under UK health and safety law.

When to use it

Run the checklist at the start of every new project or when onboarding a new subcontractor. Review it periodically during long-running projects to catch documents that have expired since the initial check. The generated PDF includes tick boxes for manual completion on site.

This tool is for guidance only and does not constitute legal advice. Requirements vary by project scope and applicable regulations.
