Employers' liability insurance is a statutory requirement for any UK employer. The fine for operating without it is up to £2,500 for every day without cover. When you're managing 20 or 30 subcontractors, each with different renewal dates, keeping track of expiry dates in a spreadsheet is a recipe for gaps.

What this tool does

Enter the name and EL insurance renewal date for each subcontractor. The calculator produces a traffic-light dashboard: green (more than 30 days), amber (8–30 days), red (7 days or fewer), and expired. For each subcontractor, it suggests reminder dates at 30, 14, and 7 days before expiry — giving you time to chase renewals before cover lapses.

Why expiry tracking matters

Under the Employers' Liability (Compulsory Insurance) Act 1969, every employer must hold EL insurance with a minimum £5M cover. A subcontractor working on your site without valid insurance is committing a criminal offence — and expired insurance weakens the evidence you can show for CDM competence checks. The most common compliance gap is insurance that was valid at appointment but expired during a long-running project without anyone noticing.

Beyond manual tracking

This calculator gives you a snapshot of your current exposure. For ongoing tracking with automated email alerts — so you never need to manually check dates again — that's exactly what we're building with SubComply.
